There are many types of faux painting. Faux painting can really give a room some much needed spice. Sponge painting is the least difficult and most common type of faux painting. Sponge painting is typically done with two coats of paint. The base coat covers the entire walls, the spongue texture is then done as a second coat of paint on top of the base color.

There is also faux sand painting. This gives the wall a nice finished rough sandy texture to it. The sand typically is mixed into the paint before you apply it to the walls.

Ageing, distressing, or crackling finishes are a more advanced faux painting technique that requires much more skill and experience. This technique involves several coats and following specific steps to achieve the proper end result.
